Throwback to 9 August 2024, during which ALAM was honored to have co-led the Asia/Oceania region of the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change (GIYSCC) 2024 alongside co-leads from Singapore, Japan, India, Indonesia and Nepal. 🇲🇾🇸🇬🇯🇵🇮🇳🇮🇩🇳🇵
A summit by, for and among Indigenous youth with inclusivity, GIYSCC 2024 was organized in partnership with @futureearth_ , in hybrid via Zoom whereby the summit circles the Earth across three different time zones. The summit was aimed to provide a “one of a kind” platform for global engagement with indigenous youths across the world sharing their perspectives, unique knowledge and strategies to empower each other in addressing climate change. 🌏
The event was held in conjunction with International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples. Each of the three time zones featured an emphasis on Small Island Developing Nations (SIDs) such as Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste and Fiji. 🏝️
From the Asia/Oceania region, 22 indigenous youth presenters and 7 moderators from 12 different countries in Asia took the floor, presented on various topics on climate change, and partook in insightful open dialogues with participants from across the globe. 👥
In total for the whole 24-hour session and 3 worldwide regions, around 900 attendees including 77 scheduled speakers from 109 countries, speaking over 149 languages participated in GIYSCC 2024. 🗺️
