πŸͺΈ World Coral Reef Day πŸŒŠπŸ’™

Did you know?🌎 Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support around 25% of all marine species.πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ύ Malaysia is home to vibrant coral reef ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, fisheries, tourism and coastal communities.⚠️ Climate change, pollution and unsustainable human activities continue to threaten these vital underwater ecosystems.

In conjunction with World Coral Reef Day, ALAM is proud to highlight our coral reef conservation efforts through the ALAM Be-Leaf Redang programme and Rakan Bumi: Projek Planet Rakan Muda 2026.

On 18 April 2026, together with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Reef Check Malaysia, Redang Marine Conservation Group (RMCG), local communities and youth volunteers, we carried out a coral reef rehabilitation initiative at Pulau Redang. The programme was witnessed by YB Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, Minister of Youth and Sports.

Key achievements included:πŸͺΈ 1,250 coral fragments replanted🌊 Establishment of a 2-hectare coral rehabilitation siteπŸ“ˆ Ongoing maintenance and monitoring to support coral growth and ecosystem recovery🀝 Training and empowerment of youth islanders through RMCG to strengthen local conservation capacity

Often called the β€œrainforests of the sea”, coral reefs play a crucial role in protecting coastlines and sustaining marine life. Through collective action and community stewardship, we can help restore and safeguard these precious ecosystems for future generations. πŸ’š

🌊 World Dugong Day πŸ‹πŸŒ±

Did you know?
πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ύ Malaysia is home to important dugong populations, especially in the waters of Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.
🌿 Dugongs are known as the β€œgardeners of the sea” because they feed on seagrass and help maintain healthy marine ecosystems.
πŸ’™ Seagrass meadows not only support dugongs, but also store carbon, protect coastlines and provide habitats for many marine species.
⚠️ Today, dugongs face growing threats from habitat loss, coastal development, marine pollution, boat strikes and accidental entanglement in fishing nets.

Lets helps create a safer home for these gentle marine mammals. 🌏✨

♻️ International Plastic Free Day πŸŒπŸ’š

Did you know?πŸ—‘οΈ More than 400 million tonnes of plastic waste are produced globally every year.🌊 Around 11 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans annually, harming marine life and ecosystems.πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ύ In Malaysia, single-use plastics remain one of the major contributors to waste pollution, impacting rivers, coastlines and biodiversity.

Plastic pollution does not disappear β€” it breaks down into microplastics that can enter our food chain, water systems and environment. Small daily actions such as using reusable bags, bottles and containers can create a meaningful impact when done collectively. 🌱

This International Plastic Free Day, let’s rethink our consumption habits and take steps towards a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future. Together, every action counts. ✨

🐒 World Turtle Day πŸŒŠπŸ’š

Did you know?
🌎 Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years β€” even surviving the extinction of dinosaurs.
πŸͺΈ Turtles help maintain healthy marine ecosystems by supporting seagrass beds and coral reefs.
⚠️ Today, many turtle species are threatened by plastic pollution, habitat loss, illegal trade and climate change.

Every small action matters β€” reducing plastic use, protecting beaches and conserving marine habitats can help ensure turtles continue to thrive for generations to come. 🌱

This World Turtle Day, let’s work together to protect our oceans and the incredible species that call them home. 🐒✨

πŸ“Έ Join the ALAM IG Challenge #2 from 15 May – 17 July 2026 and share your creativity and love for nature through photos, videos and environmental storytelling. Together, let’s inspire more people to protect our planet and marine life. πŸŒπŸ’š
