Defining ALAM
ALAM is a national initiative mooted by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia and spearheaded by Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad, with a vision to transform Malaysiansβ mindset and behaviours on the environment. Derived from the 12th Malaysia Plan, ALAM aims to create awareness, educate and instil a whistleblowing culture by collaborating with public and private sectors as well as communities. ALAM also advocates policy for improved governance and bridging the policymakers with stakeholders.

Every year, the world produces over 60 million tonnesof e-waste, more than the weight of the Great Wall of China. Yet only about 20% is properly collected and recycled. π»β‘

Discarded electronics often contain toxic materials like mercury, lead and cadmium that can contaminate our soil, water and air for decades. At the same time, they hold valuable metals such as gold, copper and lithium that can be recovered and reused if we recycle them responsibly. π

β’ The average person generates around 7 kg of e-waste every year.
β’ By 2030, global e-waste could exceed 75 million tonnes if no action is taken.
β’ Recycling just 1 million mobile phones can recover 35,000 kg of copper and 350 kg of silver.
